Terrament

Terrament is building low-cost, long-duration energy storage using underground gravity batteries. Our patent-pending design beats the competition by maximizing both height and weight: First, we achieve 10 times more height than above-ground solutions by digging a mile deep into bedrock. Second, we achieve maximum density by designing each module to support its own weight.

Each gravity storage module contains wind-turbine motor/generators to lift and lower the modules. These motor/generators are geared to racks which are bolted securely to the shaft’s bedrock walls.

When power demand is low, our system is charged by lifting the modules onto a mile-long horizontal track above ground. When power demand is high, our geared modules are dropped down the shaft to generate grid power through a regenerative braking effect.

Terrament’s design has numerous advantages over competing solutions: Our solution is highly efficient, and it does not require any scientific breakthroughs because we only use proven technologies. We don’t depend on scarce resources, and our land footprint is small, so we have no barriers to meet growing demand. With our extremely low levelized cost, this design will give us an early lead in the rapidly growing energy storage market.
