Jim smith

Jim is a deeply experienced multi-disciplinary engineer with 13 currently issued patents covering inverter, motion control and other electrical, mechanical, software technologies, and is an active member in the IEEE and other professional groups relating to photovoltaic energy generation, conversion and transmission.  Jim is currently the CTO of Bison Technologies providing management, PV systems optimization and technical consultation for many diverse utility scale solar projects.  Prior to this current venture, Jim was Assistant VP at Stony Brook University creating a LEED Platinum Advanced Energy Center with a research and technology deployment focus on Transmission, Distribution, Smart Grid testing and systems including the daily technical and business advisement of many energy start-up companies.

Prior to running the AERTC, he was President of Anorad, the global Precision Motion Control division of Rockwell Automation with engineering and manufacturing facilities in the US, Europe, the Middle East and China, as well as VP and General Manager of Aeroflex Laboratories (now Cobham plc.), optics and motion technologies for Aerospace and Military (single and multi-axis controls and drives).  Jim has been the system architect, owners engineer or senior technical advisor on over 100 worldwide utility scale PV projects ranging up to many hundreds of MW’s.    Jim holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Masters of Science degree and has been a guest lecturer in many engineering and management disciplines. Not surprisingly, Jim maintains a complete machine shop, 3D printer, sheet metal shop, electronics design lab and a fully equipped automotive fabrication shop at his home.
