As the world progresses with newer inventions and manufacturing, so does pollution. Therefore it become necessary to come up with less costly ways to develop new processes to prevent pollution and clean it up. Allied Microbiota (AMB), a spin off from Columbia University, was formed to apply the capabilities of selected microbes and their enzymes to clean-up environmental contamination and address additional problems in environmental sustainability. AMB is an industrial and environmental biotechnology firm with applications in pollution remediation and developing sustainable industrial chemicals. We use latest tools in synthetic biology, nano-materials and environmental engineering to develop novel biological pathways, organisms and devices. Our products are capable of degrading recalcitrant organic pollutants in soil and sediments and emerging contaminants in groundwater.

Our Remediation Products: 

While the environmental remediation industry has expanded significantly in the past few decades, its capabilities remain far below what is needed to reduce the inventory of contaminated soils and sediments. The remediation industry continually searches for more cost-effective technologies and the bacterial approach developed by AMB represents a breakthrough that the industry recognizes as having a significant potential. 


Our first product ‘PacBac’ is a disruptive bio-solution to treat certain recalcitrant pollutants like PCBs, Dioxins and PAHs in soil and sediments addressing a $20 billion remediation annual market. Our product is 4 to 5 times cheaper, easy to implement and sustainable than the current technologies  with equal or more effectiveness and time to implement. We are currently working on commercial pilot tests with Clean Earth, Inc and BASF.  

Our bacterial strains possess enzymatic pathways that are capable of degrading environmental pollutants that are difficult for most other organisms to catabolize.  This presents a disruptive technology for cleaning sites with organic pollutants.  There are no other microbial-based solutions that can degrade large amounts of contaminants of concern like poly-chlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins and PAHs. Our Bioremediation products use naturally isolated bacterial cultures and enzymes using techniques like composting, bio reactors and flow through reactors. Our aerobic microbes offer advantages to existing anaerobic/aerobic treatment trains for recalcitrant remediation. Extracted from natural environments and isolated under controlled laboratory conditions, these microbes destroy contamination at its source. Complete remediation often occurs in a matter of weeks or months versus several years or more for other methods, giving users the combined benefit of fast site closure and remarkable cost savings. Bioremediation with our products is effective as a stand-alone technology or may be used to augment an existing treatment method. Once we help determine that our microbes are compatible with site conditions, they can be applied in-situ or ex-situ in a very straight-forward approach. Our solutions are quick, scalable, safe, cost effective and energy efficient.  Our target contaminants are 1. Dioxins and Furans 2. PCBs 3. PAHs 4.BTEX

Our second product ‘BioBag’is a bioreactor to address 1,4 Dioxane pollution in groundwater, an important emerging contaminant found in more than 1500 public water systems with a market of over $1B. The solution is cheaper than existing technologies. We are developing a partnership with Civil and Engineering Consultants, to do pilot tests.  

Other products

We are also developing our proprietary GeoBacillus based biotech platform to develop high value proteins and other biologics at lower cost. The products have applications in surfactants, proteases, stereo-selective feedstock among others
